Young ox rescued from drainage pipe in Thailand

A 6 month-old ox became trapped 3 metres under the ground on Sunday morning in a Jomtien storm drain.

The young animal was heard by a tractor driver who was preparing to start his day when he heard the groans of the young ox who was wedged inside the 2 metre wide drain. A drain cover was removed and locals were joined by rescue workers who began a rescue, which if unsuccessful, would undoubtedly have led to the untimely death of the ox.

The road was closed by local government officials as the tractor was used to slowly lift the exhausted ox from the drain. Danger surrounded the rescue and after the ox was clear of the drain, the animal began to panic and kick-out at rescuers who managed to unstrap the ox from a harness used in the rescue. The ox calmed down and soon collapsed after the harrowing experience was finally over.

Police were called in and were initially unable to find the owner of the animal but the ox and owner were re-united later on Sunday. Much praise was afforded to the tractor driver, Khun Somkeng aged 23, who coordinated the rescue of the ox who was uninjured.
