A cyclist was stopped by police for not wearing "the right road bike clothing". Tim Burton was riding in Keynsham on Wednesday morning when he was stopped by PC Keith James.
PC James checked the bike the 25-year-old was riding was his by looking up its frame number and sent him on his way. Mr Burton later tweeted: "Just got stopped by the police for 'not wearing Lycra' but being on a road bike."
PC James, from Avon and Somerset Police, said he stopped Mr Burton
because it was "unusual to see an expensive bike being ridden by someone in
non-cycling clothes." Police said bike thefts were a priority in the area following a number of
garage and shed robberies.
Referring to social media reaction to the check, a force spokesman said:
"There's been quite a lot of Twitter activity after one of our officers stopped
and checked a cyclist in Keynsham - for not wearing the 'right' road bike
clothing." He said after carrying out a background check on the bicycle's frame number
the officer had "waved him on his way".

He'd be a bit suspicious at me, I feel if you're wearing lycra, you're taking it too seriously. I'm currently supporting a group of cyclists going diagonally across wales in 3 days. I've my road bike and no lycra to talk of.
Years ago, I worked in a bicycle shop. Most of the employees were serious road and mountain bikers who competed at the weekends. I was a bit older and more of a 'my car is broke, so I sometimes ride a bike' type. I was asked to join them on a race one weekend. I did...big mistake. After a huge breakfast we were at the race. At the starting line I notice everyone has proper racing bikes, the lycra, racing shoes, helmet, glasses etc etc etc, Myself, I have an heavy old bike (nicknamed 'the bike of sores'), hiking shorts, boots and a t-shirt. Ten minutes into the race I was puking up my huge breakfast but was able to complete one lap of a 2 lap race (it was then I thought 'sod this craic...'). Afterwards I heard some riders mention some fella puking on the course.
I acted shocked.
Hehe..
We finished it, 3 days from the river severn to the menai strait, 225 miles, 0 punctures, 0 crashes and surprisingly good weather. Not much puking either.
