Puppy rescued after several mile car journey trapped between steering mechanism and axle

A south Florida couple made a surprising discovery after finding a puppy trapped under the bonnet of their car. Rescuers removed one of the vehicle's wheels before they were able to pry the stray dog from between the steering mechanism and an axle.

Mike Jachles, Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman, said the puppy must have have travelled "anything from four, five or 10 miles. It appeared outwardly that there were no injuries. This was one lucky dog who actually had more like nine lives," he said

"The worst part is kinda around her vulva." Tiffany Sheldon, a veterinarian from Hollywood Animal Hospital said. "Its very swollen. So for her to sit down is kinda painful for her and to urinate as well."

The three-month-old puppy, now named Independence, will be moved to a rescue group. Once she is fully recovered, Animal Control will try to find her a new home.
