Banjolele-playing policeman hopes to persuade people to keep their homes and cars secure

West Midlands Police Sergeant Giles Dean is hoping his George Formby-style "When I'm Burgling Houses" song will persuade people to keep their homes and cars secure.

The policeman wrote the song, which he performs on a banjo-ukulele hybrid called a banjolele, to encourage people to be more careful with their possessions.

Sergeant Dean, who oversees neighbourhood policing in Smethwick, Birmingham, said: "We continually stress to residents through leaflets, social media, videos and face-to-face police surgeries about the importance of basic home and car security. But it’s incredible how many people still leave cars unlocked and with valuables on display, or leave windows open at night or when the house is empty.

"Opportunist thieves want ‘quick wins’ like this - and just a few simple security steps will deter these types of thieves. I’ve been playing the ukulele for a few years now so thought putting these messages out in the form of lyrics in a fun song would strike a chord with residents and motorists."
