Police warn public not to approach fugitive wallabies on the loose in Northern Ireland

Police have advised the public in County Down to be on the lookout for a missing wallaby and its joey, but warned them not to approach the animals.

The adult female wallaby and her joey have been missing since Friday but police were notified on Monday. The animals escaped from land outside the village of Clough. The mother is described as just over two feet in height and her baby is white.

Patrick Clarke of the Alliance Party said the incident has been the talk of the town. He said: "It seems to be somewhat unusual when you go into the village and hear people talking about a missing wallaby and a joey.

"Obviously the police are taking it quite seriously, putting out a police warning, so it's certainly not an everyday occurrence in this part of County Down. I have been told they are known to put their feet up and sort of box a wee bit, so my advice to anyone would be to stand well back and don't get too close to them."
