Man who called Welsh doormen 'Taffs' cleared of racial abuse

A man has been cleared of racially abusing Welsh doormen by swearing at them and calling them ‘Taffs’.

Michael James Davis, of Blakeney Hill near Lydney, Gloucestershire, was found not guilty of a charge of racially aggravated harassment at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court on Friday.

He was alleged to have shouted the word during a fracas involving his brother, police and doormen in Lydney. “He said to his brother ‘Don’t talk to them’ before swearing,” prosecutor Graham Dono told the court. “Then he is alleged to have said ‘Are you Taffs as well?’

Davis did not deny saying it but said it was not racially motivated and not aimed at anyone. He had pleaded not guilty to one charge of using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour within the hearing or sight of a person likely to be caused harassment, alarm or distress.

I simply do not understand how these can be called "racial" slurs. Welsh, English, Scots and Irish are all the same race. They might be said to denigrate an ethnic group, but certainly it's not "racial".
