Man shot himself in road rage incident

An angry motorist in Estero, Florida, trying to shoot at a woman in another car ended up shooting himself instead. Lee County Sheriff's Office deputies are suggesting the incident on Wednesday afternoon was the result of road rage. Deputies said that two cars, one operated by a white man, the other occupied by a woman driving with three teenagers inside, were driving southbound on U.S. 41.

The woman was attempting to write down a male driver’s licence plate number when he pointed a handgun at her vehicle. Once the two cars neared an intersection, the sheriff’s office says the man then appeared to point a rifle at the woman. The man continued, when he somehow shot himself with one of the guns and ended up crashing into the guardrail.

“The white male suspect did point what appeared to be a rifle at the female victim. Somewhere in that exchange, the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound which resulted in the scene you see here,” said Lt. Scott Lineberger. The man was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Linda Simmons drove past the incident's aftermath.

"People trying to pass you up all the time, honking the horn, trying to run you off the road," she said. "They need to calm down. They really do. They really need to calm down." Another driver, Theresa Dougherty, said: "It's kind of crazy someone would shoot at somebody with kids in the car. It's not funny that he had shot himself, but karma is really a you know what."
