Dogs are sly critters. I used to take daily walks around my neighborhood, and there'd be one house where an old, old dog would laze away the day in the sun. Ordinarily, he'd just watch me walk by. He recognized me and knew I meant him no harm.
Occasionally, his owner would be out doing front-yard yard work.
He still wouldn't bark at me--UNLESS his owner happened to turn his head and notice me. Then the dog would bark, as if to say, "Yeah, bark! I'm doin' my job. See?"
