
Environment Southland senior manager natural hazards Dallas Bradley said the balls were not an uncommon occurrence at the beach.
He said his best guess was that they could be eroded marram grass that has been washed out to sea.

"I think the marram grass gets rolled around in the water."

Dried out, those would make a great bonfire.
I think its a giant sea elephant that produced those balls :P
