Errant platypus released back into the wild after being found in drain at railway station

One of Australia's most unusual animals surprised Queensland Rail staff when it paid a visit to an urban rail station.

Dubbed "Percy the Platypus", the brown critter was found in a stormwater drain in Caboolture early on Wednesday morning.

Private security guard Anna-Maria spotted the small brown "furry passenger" in the drain during her regular patrols.

A Queensland Rail train controller affectionately gave the platypus his name, before scooping it up and taking it to Australia Zoo for care. Australia Zoo said the platypus was unharmed and was safely released to nearby land shortly afterwards.

There's a short video of the platypus being released to a more appropriate location here
