10,000 unused mobile homes left after Katrina

This is the costly legacy of Hurricane Katrina - a sprawling mass of caravans spreading out as far as the eye can see.

The mobile homes cost American taxpayers £215million - but not one has ever been used.

More than 10,000 mobile homes, costing about £18,000 each, lie empty and useless on an airfield in Arkansas because officials refused to install them.

The dwellings still cost £125,000 a month to store, and now no one seems to want them for fear of creating a massive trailer park. They are being kept in case of another disaster, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
