A 21-stone man was turned away by a council gym because he was too "unfit" to exercise.
Andrew Dowland, 35, had been put on a weight-loss programme by his doctor but staff at Goldenstones, Yeovil, Somerset, said he could not use equipment because his blood pressure was too high.
The NHS assistant management accountant said overweight people would never get fit unless they were allowed on exercise machines.
The gym, run by South Somerset council, offers weight loss programmes and exercise regimes designed "for everyone, no matter what age, size or fitness level".
But a council spokesman said yesterday it had turned Mr Dowland away because he was at risk of a heart attack.
