The strange case of 300 missing trestle tables

They are disappearances that have left the police baffled for more than a year. In a series of daring night-time raids on village halls, 300 large trestle tables - together with cutlery and tablecloths - have been stolen.

But it is now thought that the peculiar crimewave across the east of England is linked to the onset of the marriage season - and that wedding guests may be able to solve the mystery.

The vital clues that they must look for: wedding reception marquees with "higgledy-piggledy" tables and mismatched sets of knives and forks.

The link to the wedding season was suggested after it was noticed that for two years in a row the number of break-ins increased at the beginning of the summer, when large catering marquees are in demand.
