Bra 'pinging' schoolgirl in court

A 14-year-old schoolgirl was taken to court for common assault for "pinging" the underwiring of a classmate's bra in a case magistrates said should never have come to court.

The teenager, who cannot be named because of her age, admitted common assault after accepting that what she did was "technically" against the law.

But the court heard that the decision to prosecute came only after the girl had apologised, been suspended from school for two days for the one-off bullying incident - and grounded by her parents for a month.

Presiding magistrate Terry Bolongaro told the girl she would have to pay her victim £20 compensation but said: "We believe that an absolute discharge is appropriate. Though you are guilty we are not punishing you and you will hear no more about this.

"You apologised straight away. You've clearly shown remorse. You felt guilty and accepted the school's punishment."
