Brotherly love shaken to its foundations as matching extension brings the house down

Rekha and Mukesh Shah have tested brotherly - and indeed neighbourly - love to its extremes.



Rekha wanted an extension just like that of his brother Mukesh, who lives next door in Oadby, Leicester. However, when he dug a hole for the foundations, part of Mukesh's house fell into it.

Mukesh's home had a two-storey 1970s-built extension to the side, with a garage and two bedrooms. Rekha wanted to add a similar extension to his own home.

As he started digging a hole to begin the work, his brother's extension began to buckle under its own weight. It collapsed in the early hours of last Thursday. Both families had to flee to safety.
