Online gambler blows £158,000 of parents' money in 50 minutes

An internet gambler who used his parents' credit cards as he lost a staggering £158,000 in just 50 minutes yesterday escaped jail.

Richard Mahan ran 13 cards belonging to his wealthy mother and father up to their limit to amass astonishing debts as he desperately tried to win back his losses.

In his first hour of online gambling he won £90,000 - but then began losing, and bet right up to the limit of all his parents' cards, leaving them £68,000 in debt only 50 minutes after his profits had peaked.

His father James,51, a successful oil trader, and mother Linda, a director of her husband's company, only found out the full scale of his losses when their credit card companies contacted them.

They were told that unless they called the police they would have to repay the money themselves.
