With a bloodied white Reebok sneaker sitting outside a North 17th Street convenience store and a man and a boy hospitalized with knife wounds, neighbours wondered: All this over a yo-yo? But police and witnesses said the unpurchased multi-coloured toy led 24-year-old store clerk Amar Shreiteh to attack 14-year-old Jeremius Howard Monday morning.
Police said Howard picked the yo-yo up off the floor of the store that sells snacks, cold beer singles and T-shirts with such logos as the Pillsbury "dope boy." The store's hand-lettered exterior reads "Freindly Meat & Grocery." When Howard's sister paid for her snacks, Howard put down the yo-yo and tried to leave.
Police said Shreiteh demanded the boy pay for the toy, but Howard told him it was already opened, that he didn't want it. Then Shreiteh punched the boy, police said.
After a fight, Shreiteh pulled Howard behind a counter and tried to stab him, police said. Howard's cousin, 16-year-old Shamone Starr, said Shreiteh yanked the boy near a meatcutter and poked him on the back of his left arm with a butcher knife.
Howard was treated and released at Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute, and Sabla remained in critical condition.
