Brits have a 'walking wealth' of over £851

Between mobile phones and MP3 players, designer watches and fancy handbags, the average Briton is now walking around festooned with kit that is worth a sum that would have bought a house a few generations ago.

An estimated £39bn-worth of clothes and gadgets is out there on the streets each day - an average of £851 a head.

The wealthiest age groups are 25-34 at £860, and 45-54 at £882. Older people are more likely to be carrying cash: the over- 55s carry an average of £40, the 25-34 group only £25. Property breaks down as clothes, £123; jewellery including watches, £323; accessories, £93; gadgets, £281; cash, £32. Mobile phones are ubiquitous - carried by 84% - but 8% also carry a laptop, and 12% a designer watch and an MP3 player.
