A teenager returning home from a party was killed by a suspected drunk driver after her parents told her they could not collect her because they had been drinking.
Eluned Cleverley, 18, died when she was struck by a parked car in Wallasey, Merseyside. A van driven by a 24-year-old man arrested over the death had shunted the car onto the pavement and into Eluned.
Her parents said that she had called them 20 minutes before asking for a lift but they had to refuse, saying they had drunk a couple of glasses of wine and did not feel able to drive.
Edward Cleverley, 58, said yesterday: “We have been the most conscientious parents. We always would go and get her and run her friends home. On this one occasion, when we didn’t go — this happens. It is just unbelievable.
