Douglas County Sheriff's Department said Damon Fitzgerald, 29, managed to obtain a handcuff key about 30 days ago.
He apparently got in a fight with an officer and managed to get the officer's key ring and then barricaded himself inside his cell.
Officers said Fitzgerald broke apart the key ring and scattered the keys around the cell. By the time they came in and searched, one key was missing.
Lieutenants said for an entire month Fitzgerald kept the key wrapped up in a plastic bag hidden inside his rectum.
