'Mafia' horse races on Sicily's streets

Traffic problems in the southern Italian town of Messina have reached new levels as illegal horse races run by the local mafia take over the roadways.

Italian police recently discovered horses were being doped and used in illegal races in the early morning hours, mainly at weekends.

Closed circuit television pictures show horses racing along the motorway surrounded by criminals' cars and scooters, with many other cars stopping and watching the spectacle.

There's a video here.
