Priests 'took £4.5m from collection plate to pay for women and gambling'

Two priests lavished £4.5 million on women, casino trips and property including luxury Florida apartments and a pub in Ireland after raiding the cash from church collection plates, US prosecutors allege.

Behind their holy image, Irish-born Monsignor John Skehan, 79, and Reverend Francis Guinan, 63, were "professional money launderers" with lavish lifestyles, it is alleged.

The pair are accused of helping themselves to money donated by rich members of their congregation in Delray Beach and sinking it into slush funds to pay for everything from girlfriends to dentist's bills to foreign junkets.

Skehan was in custody last night after being arrested as he arrived back in the US from Ireland. Guinan was believed to have been away on a Pacific cruise and was still being hunted.
