Shocking McCartney divorce claims

The protracted, grim and public breakdown of relations between Sir Paul McCartney and his estranged wife continued with newspaper reports containing shocking allegations that the former Beatle was violent towards Lady McCartney.

The Daily Mail quoted apparently leaked court documents, allegedly prepared by Lady McCartney, which accused Sir Paul of drinking heavily, taking drugs, attacking her and failing to make allowances for her disability. Lady McCartney, the former model, Heather Mills, lost a leg in a road accident in 1993.

Friends of Sir Paul will find this hard to believe and the singer has put out a statement refuting the allegations . A source close to Sir Paul told London's Evening Standard that the accusations, which were leaked to the Press Association and Bloomberg news agency, were part of an orchestrated campaign to defame him before the divorce comes to court.

The papers described in The Daily Mail accuse Sir Paul of attacking his wife four times during their four-year marriage. Sir Paul, who is 64, married Lady McCartney, 38, in 2002 and did not sign a pre-nuptial agreement.

The papers run to 13 pages and accuse Sir Paul of being 'Physically violent', of 'Choking her', calling her 'Ungrateful bitch', that he 'Poured red wine over her head' and that he left her to 'Crawl on her hands and knees'.
