Woman jailed after poisoning, shooting and burning pets

A 72-year-old woman who poisoned, shot and finally burned to death her four German shepherds because she said she couldn't afford to feed them was given a two-year jail sentence on Friday for aggravated cruelty to animals.

The dogs were still burning on a backyard bonfire when sheriff's deputies arrived.

When asked if she wished to speak on Friday, Jane Fletcher of Little Falls got to her feet with her attorney's help and said, "Nothin.'"

The judge said Fletcher has "substantial mental health issues."

Fletcher's 34-year-old son, Edward, who hosted the bonfire, pleaded guilty Thursday to two counts of aggravated cruelty in return for a 16-month jail term.
