A civil servant recovering in hospital from an ordeal in which he was stranded for 24 days on a mountain here said he survived by sipping barbecue sauce and water from a bottle.
The rescued man, Mitsutaka Uchikoshi, 35, reportedly told his boss who visited him in hospital that the water and sauce had prevented him from starving to death. At the time of his discovery at the end of October, he was barely conscious, and he is still in hospital, but is reportedly making a good recovery.
Uchikoshi had visited Kobe's Mount Rokko with a group of workmates for a barbecue on Oct. 7. When they had finished, other members of the group went down the mountain in a cable car, but Uchikoshi parted with them, saying he would walk down by himself. However, he failed to return.
Uchikoshi, an official of the Nishinomiya Municipal Government, told his boss that he had lost his way while looking for the entrance to the path leading down the mountain, and had slipped in a mountain stream, breaking his pelvis and becoming unable to move. He had stayed in the same spot waiting for help.
Uchikoshi said he had about half a bottle of barbecue sauce left over from the barbecue, and he continued to take small sips of it to survive
