How Pickles the possum sailed 12,000 miles to Britain

After smuggling herself into a crate of onions on a cargo ship docked in New Zealand, this two-year- old marsupial journeyed an incredible 12,000 miles to the other side of the world.

Following stops in Australia and Holland, Pickles landed at Felixstowe six weeks later.

Experts reckon the foot-long possum – subsequently named Pickles – survived the trip to the Suffolk port by eating the onions and licking condensation off the inside of the crate.

Pickles, who is an Australian brushtailed possum, has now been adopted by the South Lakes Wild Animal Park, Dalton-in-Furness, Cumbria.
