Emergency crews rushed to the Catawba River this afternoon to save a young child and his pregnant mother from their vehicle that plunged into the water.
Police said the woman driving the SUV passed out at the wheel near uptown Charlotte, but her vehicle continued travelling about 8 miles before crashing.
A mother and her son found themselves in waist deep water after their SUV ran off the road in West Mecklenburg County.
Police said the woman also slammed into an occupied car before hitting the water. Thw owner of that car and his wife were taking a walk along the Catawba River when the accident happened. They were heading back to their car when the SUV came careering toward the water.
Police pulled the 4-year-old boy out of the back seat of the SUV. He said that his mother kept passing out as they were driving.
