YouTube film lands student deal with media giant

A Scottish student who posted videos on YouTube is set to earn thousands after being spotted and signed by the media giant Time Warner.

James Provan's latest YouTube hit, The Garden - filmed at his parents' house in Aberdeen - is already being used as an advert for a Time Warner internet service in the United States.

Provan's distinct, idiosyncratic style - which blends his original music with the same stop-animation technique used for Wallace and Gromit - has made him one of the most popular film-makers in cyberspace.

He first shot to fame last year when his Pancakes! film became one of the most popular videos on the internet. It was featured on news programmes across the world and viewed by some 1.5 million people.

His new video, shot in August and September last year and just under five minutes long, has so far had more than 58,000 hits. After posting it in October, Provan, 24, received an e-mail from Times Warner, asking for permission to use a clip for an advertising campaign for its Road Runner broadband service.

The company paid Provan £2,000 to use several seconds of The Garden, which is seen along with 19 excerpts from other YouTube films. His friends who appeared in the film will receive a portion of the cash.

There's a BBC news video here, and all of his YouTube videos can be found here.
