It started as a daring escape bid and ended with three prisoners forced to hang around as authorities brought them back to earth and into detention.
And for all the hi-tech security available to prisons, it was the decidedly old-school razor-wire-on-wall trick that cut short a breakout at Bochum, Germany after all three would-be escapees became helplessly tangled.
One managed to get over the top but was left dangling precariously halfway up an external wall, his flesh and clothes tearing as he struggled like a spider in a web.
Prison authorities and ambulance officers soon had the hapless trio off the wall and back behind bars.
"There was never any danger that they could have escaped," said prison director Henning Koester.
