Council victorious, defeated in legal battle against itself

A New Zealand council is celebrating after it successfully managed to prosecute itself for breaking its own rules, with the result that it will have to pay a fine to itself.

The legal triumph came from Waitakere City Council, who became very angry when Waitakere City Council failed to get proper consent from Waitakere City Council to move six houses that were built on a flood plain.

As a result, they took Waitakere City Council to court, with the result that Waitakere City Council was fined $4800 (about £1720) and ordered to pay $780 court costs.

The money that Waitakere City Council pays in the fine will go to Waitakere City Council, minus 10% which goes to the court.

Waitakere City Council pleaded guilty to the charges. They did, however, also hire a lawyer to represent them, at an unknown cost.
