Poolside scuffle a 'family matter', court told

A scuffle between a Ukrainian swim coach and his daughter was over a "personal and delicate" family matter and had nothing to do with coaching, a Melbourne court was told yesterday.

Mikhaylo Zubkov, 38, was filmed pushing and shoving his swimmer daughter Kateryna Zubkova, 18, during an altercation in a marshalling area at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night.

The pair sat in the front row of Melbourne Magistrates Court where police sought an extension of an intervention order against Mr Zubkov.

His lawyer, Florian Andrighetto, told the court his client was a good coach and a loving father.

He said the incident was a personal, delicate and private matter and denied it was part of a "bizarre training method" to spur his daughter on.

The hearing before Magistrate Dan Muling continues.
