Should this baby bear be killed?

Animal rights activists are calling for a baby polar bear raised by humans to be killed.

The abandoned polar bear cub named Knut looks cute, cuddly and has become a front-page media darling, but now the activists insist he would have been better off dead than raised by humans.

"Feeding by hand is not species-appropriate but a gross violation of animal protection laws," animal rights activist Frank Albrecht was quoted as saying by the mass-circulation Bild daily, which has featured regular photo spreads tracking fuzzy Knut's frolicking.

"The zoo must kill the bear," he added.

But Berlin Zoo has vowed it will not kill the baby polar bear.

"We are keeping Knut," Berlin zoo's vet told the BBC. "He's staying alive."

The zoo says Knut should be strong enough to make his first public appearance at the end of this week, having amassed an army of fans who have followed his development - from walking to weaning - in the city's newspapers.

There are several videos featuring Knut here.
