'Chameleon' sunglasses developed

Supercool shades that change colour at the touch of a button could soon be transforming eyewear.

A small switch on the frame will allow the user to "dial up" lenses of almost any colour.

The same set of glasses could be transparent, red, green, yellow or purple.

For those who want to view the world through rose-coloured spectacles, that will be possible too.

US scientists at the University of Washington in Seattle, developed the technology using "smart" plastics that change colour when an electric current flows through them.

The rainbow lenses are created by multi-layering sheets of the material with different properties and altering the level of current.
