Driving ban ends round-the-world trip before it got started

Adventurous Nigel Rees planned to travel the world in his camper van, but got caught drink-driving as he was about to set off.

Rees, 45, sold his house and bought a luxury motor home which he stocked with provisions for the once-in-a-lifetime holiday.

But Rees had one last night on the town with friends, then staggered off to spend the night in his van.

Magistrates at Ammanford heard police pulled him over when he drove off the next morning. Rees was breathalysed and found to be more than three times over the drink-drive limit.

Rees, whose address was given as The Camper Van, Ammanford, was banned from driving for two-and-a-half years - scuppering his dream trip.

He told magistrates, "I had planned on travelling but I don't know what I'm going to do now." Rees, who admitted drink driving, was also fined £600 and ordered to pay £60 costs.

After the case he said, "My idea was eventually to arrive in New York, but I don't suppose I'll be doing that now."
