South African woman hired gang to kill baby

A South African court has convicted a woman of hiring a gang to kill the six-month-old daughter of her lover.

Dina Rodrigues paid four men, all of whom were also convicted of murder and robbery, a total of $1,500 to murder Jordan-Leigh Norton in 2005.

The men posed as delivery men to gain entry into the Cape Town home. The baby died of a stab wound to the neck.

It is the first case of its kind in South Africa where an estimated 1,000 children are killed every year.

There was applause when Judge Basheer Waglay read out the guilty verdicts in a packed courtroom in Cape Town.

He said that Ms Rodrigues had been motivated by jealousy to kill her lover's child from a previous relationship.
