Schoolboy is captain of the rugby team despite being nearly blind

A talented youngster has become captain of his local ruby team - despite being nearly blind.

Little Sam Wishart, 11, suffers from a rare condition which has severely damaged his sight and he can only see through very dark tinted lenses.

Despite this he plays full-contact rugby for Frome RFC in Somerset and is now captain of the under-11s.

He suffers from cone dystrophy which has resulted in photophobia and nystagmus, which means his eyes shake, he can see no colour and looking towards a light source reduces his vision further, hence the need for permanent dark glasses.

As Sam moves up through the age groups and the game becomes more physical, he may have to wear his contact lenses on the pitch instead of his glasses.
