Stolen UK wheelie bin turns up in Bulgaria

A bin was spotted by a city council officer more than 1,200 miles from its Peterborough home – in Bulgaria. It was being used to mix cement.

The 240-litre green recycling bin which is clearly stamped with the city council's name was seen in a residential area near the Black Sea resort of Sunny Beach in Bulgaria.

Emma Bakewell, from Market Deeping, works in the office of the director of resources.

She was on holiday with Scott Wright in Bulgaria, staying in the town of Elinte, when the pair stumbled on the Peterborough bin. "It was just so bizarre seeing a city council wheelie bin right there in the middle of Bulgaria."

City services director Mike Heath said: "This is the most outrageous example of theft of a wheeled bin we have come across. We have distributed close to 200,000 black, green and brown wheeled bins to homes and these bins remain council property."

Some 2,515 similar bins were stolen from the city last year and replacing them cost the taxpayer £75,450.
