Shameless thieves have made off with most of the steel fence surrounding a Derby primary school's playing field.
People living near Pear Tree Community Junior School thought city council workmen were carrying out repairs to the 240-metre fence.
They arrived at the school wearing florescent jackets and set out cones before proceeding to dismantle the fence between about 8am and 5pm.
The thieves removed 81 panels, cutting through parts of it with an angle grinder, and it is believed it was stolen to sell as scrap.
A police spokeswoman said no other incidents of the kind had been reported but warned schools and their neighbours to keep an eye out for any similar activity.
