Swedes welcome drink-drivers

Alcohol that is smuggled into Sweden is being turned into biogas, helping to fuel the country’s public transport system.

Almost all of the 700,000 litres (150,000 gallons) of smuggled alcohol seized by Customs last year was converted into fuel for 1,000 buses, lorries and one biogas train.

“We used to just pour it down the drain, but because of the increased volumes we had to look around for new solutions,” Ingrid Jerlebrink, a Customs spokeswoman, said.

The beer, wine and spirits are taken to a plant in Linköping, 125 miles (200km) southwest of Stockholm, where they are heated and turned into biogas.

In 2003 about a quarter of energy used in Sweden came from renewable sources. The EU average is 6 per cent. In Stockholm a quarter of city buses run on ethanol or biogas.
