Blooming fuss

Dedicated gardener June Turnbull said she is determined to carry on tending to a village flower bed - despite council bosses insisting she needs warning signs and a lookout while she is working.

Disabled Mrs Turnbull, 79, has been tending the flower bed at the entrance to Urchfont High Street in Urchfont, near Devizes, Wiltshire for eight years.

So she was flabbergasted last week when she was told she would need to wear a high visibility jacket, put out men at work signs, and have a second person standing by whenever she wanted to go along and do a bit of weeding.

Mrs Turnbull said: "I can't drag around three great metal signs and have someone standing by in case I might want to do a bit of work on it.

"I don't care what they do to me. I will continue working on the flower bed - they can send me to prison for all I care."

Peter Hanson, divisional highways manager for Wiltshire County Council, said: "We provide both signs and jackets free of charge to any volunteers."
