Cat up a tree? That'll cost you ...

Fed-up firefighters are threatening to charge to rescue cats from trees, free dogs from holes and help overweight people out of their homes.

In six months, the Lancashire fire service had calls from 40 people stuck in their baths, six trapped in phone boxes and eight who could not get out of their chairlifts.

Thirteen youngsters got their heads stuck in railings and 15 were stranded in trees.

A spokesman for the service denied it was a money saving plan but was designed to 'concentrate available resources for the most deserving cases'.

An RSPCA spokesman said: 'It would be a sad day for animal welfare if firefighters refused to turn out.'
