A Kamloops man is being heralded as a hero for saving the life of a 12-year-old boy attacked by a cougar at a private campsite near this community northwest of Kamloops on Wednesday night.
Police and conservation officers say Colton Reeb was walking to an outhouse on property owned by family friends about 6:30 p.m. when a male cougar weighing about 27 kilograms jumped him from behind.
Colton was about 50 paces from the cabin where his family had been staying at a campsite in the bush between Kelly Lake and Pear Lake, about 15 kilometres from Clinton in the south Cariboo.
Hearing his screams, property owner Mr. Marc Patterson ran outside and kicked the cougar repeatedly in the head.
"The cat had Colton's head in its mouth. And its front paws were around his neck, and its bottom paws were pushing on his stomach," Mr. Patterson said.
Colton presently remains in hospital.
"He's upset he's going to miss out on his camping trip" his father said
