Giant African snail found on train

A train driver tidying up his carriages was shocked to find a giant African snail under a seat.

Lionel Smith at first thought the massive mollusc was a bread roll as he cleaned at Banbury station, Warwicks.

The animal looked dead, but Lionel gave it some water and two days later it woke up.

Appeals for the abandoned pet’s owner to come forward went unanswered.

Now the animal has been taken in by The Stratford Butterfly Farm — where keepers have named it Lionel.
