Now you risk £500 fine for feeding Trafalgar Square pigeons

They are Trafalgar Square's most famous inhabitants.

But, from yesterday, anyone caught feeding the pigeons could face a £500 fine.

The outright ban was brought in by council chiefs who have mounted a determined campaign to force out bird-lovers who have been exploiting a loophole in the law.

Teams of officials took to the streets at dawn, armed with the power to fine anyone caught feeding the birds.

The move by Westminster council marks the most concerted effort yet to rid the square of pigeons, seen as a nuisance and health hazard.
