Firefighters had to drill through a pavement to free a 10-year-old girl trapped in a drain outside her home.
Chanelle Edwards was playing with friends when she fell down the hole and became stuck up to her waist yesterday afternoon. When her mother and neighbours failed to pull Chanelle out they called firefighters, who used drills to break up the pavement and remove the cast-iron surround.
Chanelle, who started to panic during her hour-long ordeal in Walton, Liverpool, was treated by paramedics for cuts and bruises.
Firefighters said the drain cover had broken some time ago, with a piece of cardboard placed over the hole as a temporary measure.
Gary Leith, from Merseyside Fire Service, said: "It was a dangerous situation and she was lucky to escape without more serious injuries."
