The romeo runaways ... aged 12 and 13

Young Romeo Zeno Kastrati had planned the perfect evening in the city of romance. A cosy meal for two followed by a stroll across the bridges of Venice, ending up in the £500 honeymoon suite of an exclusive hotel.

But when Zeno booked into the swanky Hotel Paganelli, he neglected to mention one thing. He was just 12 and his girlfriend Maria Di Matteo was 13.

The besotted youngsters had withdrawn all their savings and travelled by train to Venice, where they planned to consummate their puppy-love affair.

The receptionist at the hotel was suspicious because the pair looked so young and paid cash for their room and called the police. But by the time officers arrived, Zeno and Matteo, of Grosetto, Tuscany, were already out on the town.

The police eventually caught up with them at the upmarket San Zaccaria restaurant where the couple were gazing into one another's eyes.

A police spokesman said: "Apart from leaving their parents absolutely frantic, they hadn't really done anything wrong. We told them to save their money and come back when they were old enough to enjoy Venice properly."
