Coffin found at bus stop

It looks like someone has pulled a classic Halloween prank - but this grim scene on a busy main road was deadly serious.

Pals Glenn Ellis and Daniel Ryan could not believe their eyes when they spotted the abandoned coffin next to a bus stop on Crescent Road, Dukinfield, Manchester.

The teenagers checked that the box was empty before taking photographs as workmen from nearby Dukinfield crematorium hurriedly collected it in an estate car.

Daniel, 15, a pupil at Astley Sports College, said: "At first we thought it was a Halloween prank. But it looked as though it had somebody's name and the size of the body on it. It was pretty spooky, but thankfully there was no body inside.

"We heard that it had fallen off the back of a lorry and was being taken to a nearby funeral directors."

A spokesman for Tameside council confirmed the coffin had been found on the road by a member of the public and staff had taken it to Dukinfield crematorium.
