Crumbs! Eighty-year-old biscuit tin is under the hammer for £3,000

A biscuit tin with its original 80-year-old biscuits could sell for £3,000 when it goes up for auction this month.

The rare 1920s tin, in the form of a Sports Coupe car, has electric headlights so that a child could play with it afterwards. It is expected to fetch anywhere between £2,000 and £3,000.

Leigh Gotch, Head of Bonhams Toys department, said: “In more than ten years of working in the auction business, I have never seen a biscuit tin of this age offered for sale with its original biscuits. It is remarkable that they were not eaten, although I wouldn’t suggest that the new owner tries them in the future.” Some of the biscuits are in the form of numbers, some letters, and others depict exotic animals with their names stamped on them.



The William Crawford & Sons tin is presented with its original box, which carries the inscription, “To Ted wishing him many Happy returns of the day from Lady Eleanor”. It is in excellent condition.

The red and black lithographed tin shows a male driver and a female passenger, as well as a spare wheel.

The box will be a main attraction at Bonhams’ Toys, Trains, Dolls and Teddy Bears Sale on November 20 and 21 in Knightsbridge in London.
