A Spanish man who begged his estranged girlfriend to marry him live on television, only to be see the proposal spurned, has appeared in court as a suspect in her death.
Ricardo Navarro, 30, got down on his knees in tears to offer an engagement ring to his ex-girlfriend, a Russian woman identified only as Svetlana, on a daytime talk show.
"I love you. You only live once, as you told me, and I want to spend mine with you," Mr Navarro told Svetlana, also 30, on El Diario de Patricia last week.
"I want you to marry me. You are everything to me. Everything."
Svetlana, who had broken up with Mr Navarro about a month ago, was silent during the proposal, and said only "no" when pressed for a reply.
She was found on Sunday with her throat cut at the entrance of her flat in Alicante and died in hospital two days later. Police then arrested Mr Navarro, who faced a preliminary hearing before a judge today. He has not been formally charged.
