A Volusia County nursing home resident who was taken to a hospital on Wednesday for respiratory problems had maggots in one of his eyes, an infected breathing tube, a partially inserted catheter and bed sores, according to authorities.
The unidentified 82-year-old University Center West nursing home resident was transported to Florida Hospital DeLand, where staff members discovered the ailments, DeLand police said.
Deland investigators confirmed that maggots were found in the man's left eye and that they had never seen anything like it.
